This is a rare incunable folio -dating back to 1490, WITH SCARCE TITLE PAGE - the hard to find Basel edition of the works of the famous medieval preacher and monk Robertus Caracciolus; with the printing date of February 26, 1490 and the famous Kesler engraved printing device. "The productions of Kesler's press are very rarely met with. The present affords a fine copy, with ample margins, of one of the noblest specimens of his press. It is described in Panzer, vol. I. P. 168." The book is handsomely printed in double columns with capital spaces, pagination is a9 (stat 10) b4 (stat 6) c6 d8 e6 f8 g6 h8 i6 k6 l8 m6 n7 A6 B6 C8 D6 E8 F6 G6 H8 J6 K6 L8 M6 N6 O6 P6 B 186 unnumbered leaves (stat 189) or 362 pages. It is a folio measuring 8.5" x 12" (22.5 cm x 30.5 cm) ISTC No. : ic00148000, References: Goff C148; H 4485*. Condition is good. Title page has a neat repair at the top edge of the title page, with some old notations and an ownership date of 1622 , soiled and worn edges. Pages have very occasional contemporary notations and marginalia, mostly clean with some foxing and age. Page E5 has a tear at bottom edge not affecting text, there are a few contemporary notations along with several pointing hands. Colophon page has an archivally repaired clean tear. First and last blanks are renewed, but otherwise all present. Binding is very handsome. Old leather boards with a beautiful patina, new spine with 5 raised bands, red leather spine label with bright gilt - quite lovely. Robertus Caracciolus, also known as Roberto Caraccioli and Roberti de Littio was born in 1425 of a noble family in Lecci (Littio) in the Kingdom of Naples. By the age of 30 he had obtained such a reputation for excellent speaking and preaching that he was honored by a Brief from Pope Nicholas V. Caraccioli was employed in honorable commissions by Popes Callixtus III and Sixtus IV. He was also appointed Bishop of Aquino (home of Thomas Aquinas) and also of Lecci, where he died in 1495, five years after the printing of this book. His Sermons in Praise of the Saints was first printed in 1489 in Venice, this edition followed shortly thereafter; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 398 pages
